Invitation to MBN Facilitator Training
This opportunity is extended to health clinicians experienced at working with parents and infants, who hold an interest in, and capacity to deliver the Mother-Baby Nurture® under supervision. This 3-day training is the beginning of an ongoing learning process in developing reflective, relationship-focussed group facilitation skills. A commitment to ongoing reflective supervision, professional development and model fidelity is required - outlined in a Facilitator Agreement with MBN. A background in psychotherapeutic perinatal and infant mental health practice is highly beneficial but not essential, especially for those working outside the metro area.

Facilitated by Sharon Cooke and Elaine Cumber

Places limited to 12 participants - with priority given to those with capacity for program delivery

MBN group is delivered by not-for-profit and government organisations, free to families, thanks to government grant funding. In most cases MBN facilitator training costs are borne by the employing organisation as a condition of their grant funding agreement. MBN is a training organisation and does not employ facilitators and as such, cannot guarantee employment after course completion. We welcome clinicians willing to participate (self-funded) for their own professional development or with the intent to secure future employment with a MBN service provider. The MBN training content is a licensed copyrighted product that cannot be copied, on-sold, reproduced, or altered without written permission, and the program cannot be delivered without a Service Provider Agreement with MBN.

Learning Objectives This training is designed to be both educative and experiential. Participants will be engaged in reflective processes, with careful attention placed on the content and pace of each session to give room for deeper learning. Participants will build their knowledge and skills incrementally, commencing with an evidence-based rationale, model description and theory of change. This will be followed by observing its application, viewing film footage of groups in action. On day three participants will have the opportunity to take turns experiencing the group process as participants as well as facilitators. Critical to the role of the MBN Facilitator, participants will be invited to reflect on the range of personal and interpersonal processes (observations, thoughts, feelings, experiences) that are elicited by the material, in particular, noticing countertransference as a way of feeling into what the infant might be experiencing. By the end of the training, participants will have had opportunity to consider the MBN group processes from the perspective of the facilitator, the mother and the infant.

Information will be provided on the:
  • evidence and theory informing practice and mechanisms of change
  • intergenerational transmission of trauma & attachment security
  • psychological processes of becoming a mother
  • relational needs of the infant and how these shape the developmental trajectory
  • role of the facilitators during the beginning, middle and end phase of the group
  • role of reflective dialogue in the group, reflective supervision and note-taking
